Participant’s Statements

I had one of the most amazing weeks of my life on the exchange and brought back so many memories and good feelings from my time on the Jura mountains. From the masterful craft of dry stone wall buidling to the deep conversation around peace, barriers and cultures the week was a 10/10. What I will take from the “Building Walls – Breaking Walls” exchange is a better understanding of divided cultures and why it’s important to embrace your culture without stomping on another one.

Ryan, Northern Ireland

Study visit in Kosovo.

23 – 26 November 2017, Pristina, Mitrovica – Kosovo

Cross the Gap” invites young adults from the German and French part of Switzerland to visit places in Kosovo with populations of mixed cultures.

Kosovo – as many states in the region following the war in Ex-Yugoslavia, has a number of places with different populations (e.g. Serbian and Albanian populations). A famous example is the city of Mitrovica where its river forms the border between the 2 communities and where the only crossing bridge was closed for many years.

In this study visit, we saw projects that support co-existence between the communities and to brought young adults from different cultures in Switzerland and different cultures in Kosovo together in order to exchange their experiences and feelings about cultural division in one country – and to discuss possible approaches to overcome it.

Participants share their learnings one year after the project in Israel

The “Building Walls – Breaking Walls” in Lotan was a very memorable experience. We got the opportunity to explore and learn about other cultures , traditions and customs through many activities, presentations and direct contact with others.

The program certainly had an influence on me, I became more open to hearing and leaning about other cultures, even if it is difficult sometimes, it also showed me how similar we all are to each other, and with some encouragement, how easily we can become accepting and more open. We also leaned how to build mud bricks and walls, about agriculture and architecture , and through that process we were able to all connect and learn about each other more.

A training course that explored social inclusion through Theatre of the Oppressed & Forum theatre and plan achievable local and international projects that support the participation of young people !

The aims were:

For participants to learn more about the issues and challenges of marginalised young people and help them address this marginalisation through drama methodologies and through the specific methodology of ‘Theatre of the Oppressed’.
We believe this methodology can address the very essence of non-formal experiental learning and works excellently with people of all abilities and levels of education. This ties in with The European Youth Forums policy papers that recognises that non-formal learning contributes to the personal and social development of young people.
In their study of the impact of non-formal education on young people employability the European Youth Forum have tangible evidence of the value and the role of youth organizations as quality education providers and of their contribution to the development of relevant skills of young people.

30 youth workers from Czech Republic, Germany, Israel, Ireland, Jordan, Kosovo, Palestine, Portugal, Poland, Serbia  and Switzerland participated.
